The current federal administration, led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is currently investigating several former ministers, lawyers, and politicians, many of whom were close to former President Enrique Peña Nieto. The charge against them includes fraud, money laundering, organized crime, illicit enrichment, among other crimes.
Lozoya is wanted for money laundering, bribery, and fraud. He was very close to former President Enrique Peña Nieto and was appointed as Pemex‘s executive director on December 4, 2012, and until February 8, 2016. Lozoya was been linked to the Odebrecht case, as he allegedly received a USD $10.5 million bribe. He is also allegedly involved in the purchase of a fertilizer plant from Altos Hornos de México.
Although Lozoya is on the run, his mother, Gilda Margarita Austin has been charged in relation to the Odebrecht case in Mexico. His wife, Marielle Eckes and his sister, Gilda Lozoya have arrest warrants issued against them for their alleged participation in a bribery scheme orchestrated by Odebrecht.
Duarte is the former governor of Veracruz and a fellow member of the PRI party. While he was still in office, he was accused of money laundering and organized crime. After his conviction, Duarte released a video that shows the moments before his arrest and claims that Peña Nieto gave him money to bribe high-ranking officials and that he orchestrated his arrest with the previous administration to protect his family.
Javier Duarte‘s wife, Karime Macías, fled to London after Duarte went on the run. She is currently facing an extradition trial after being accused of embezzlement by Mexican authorities.
Carlos Romero Deschamps
Romero Deschamps was the head of the oil workers union for 26 years; he stepped down from his position in October 2019. He has also been a PRI senator. Mexican authorities have filed lawsuits against him for illicit enrichment and money laundering. Government officials have yet to confirm if he has fled the country.
Collado was former President Enrique Peña Nieto‘s personal attorney, moreover, he handled Peña Nieto’s divorce from actress Angélica Rivera. The lawyer has been in jail since July 2019, accused of money laundering and organized crime. Authorities are currently investigating 42 companies linked to Collado and Andorran authorities seized his bank accounts in the country.
Rosario Robles has been accused of participating in one of Mexico’s largest fraud, known as the Master Fraud. She is currently in prison and was accused of diverting public resources. During the Peña Nieto administration, she has the head of two federal agencies: the SEDESOL and the SEDATU.
Gerardo Ruiz Esparza
Santiago Nieto, the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit, confirmed that Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, the former Communications and Transport Minister is being investigated by Mexican authorities in relation to the OHL case, a corruption case that took place during the previous administration.
Pedro Joaquín Coldwell
Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, the former Energy Minister allegedly approved the purchase of Fertinal, a fertilizer plant that was basically useless, despite knowing that it was bankrupt, in debt, and obsolete; as a result, Coldwell is being investigated.
Coldwell denies any wrongdoing and released a statement claiming that the decisions made “by the former council members were made after Pemex presented evaluations and expert opinions, carried out by international firms established in the country, who certified the value of the assets, and the viability and convenience of the purchase of this company (Fertinal).”
The former Economy Minister, Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal, is also being investigated for the purchase of the obsolete fertilizer plant Fertinal. Guajardo has said he is willing to cooperate with authorities to explain the role the Economy Ministry had in the purchase of Fertinal.
General Eduardo León Trauwitz
León Trawitz was Enrique Peña Nieto’s chief bodyguard between 2005 and 2011 when he was the governor of the State of Mexico. Years later, he became the director of Pemex Security. He is being investigated for his participation in a fuel theft network inside Pemex. Trawitz was in charge of monitoring Pemex’s pipeline network and fighting fuel theft.
